Welcome to the latest episode of the No Bullsh*t Property Podcast, featuring Angela Mansell of Mansell Building Solutions, where we will be continuing our series on Women in Property. This episode delves into critical industry issues, including the anticipated election’s impact on construction and Angela’s journey in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Election Ramifications on Construction

We start the discussion with the potential impact of the (then) upcoming election on the construction industry. Both major political parties put housing and planning policy reform at the forefront of their election campaigns.

Policy changes will greatly affect the industry’s future, making this election important for everyone involved in construction. We talk about the difficulty of meeting housing targets no matter which party wins. The big issue is whether the industry can deliver on these promises. Angela points out that even if there is plenty of land and opportunity, a shortage of skilled workers could slow things down. This leads into her sharing her own experiences and the growth of her company.

Angela Mansell’s Journey

Angela’s journey is a compelling narrative of resilience and adaptability. Initially discouraged from entering construction by her father, who founded Mansell Building Solutions, Angela pursued a degree in history and a career in the travel industry.

However, the impact of the 9/11 attacks on her job security led her to reconsider. In 2002, she joined her father’s business, marking the beginning of a remarkable career in construction. Over two decades, she has seen and contributed to significant changes in the industry.

Leadership and Inclusivity

Angela runs the business with her sister, Steph, steering it in new directions. Their leadership underscores the importance of adaptability and vision in sustaining and growing a family-owned business in a competitive industry.

As the Managing Director, Angela has witnessed the industry’s gradual shift towards inclusivity and diversity. When she started, construction sites were rarely welcoming to women. Now leaders like Angela and Steph, represent a gradual shift change.

Beyond gender, the company is committed to broader diversity initiatives. They are actively addressing age, religious and ethnic diversity, as well as other dimensions of inclusivity such as neurodiversity. This holistic approach recognises that varied perspectives and experiences are crucial for innovation and problem-solving in construction.

Conclusion

Angela’s journey offers inspiration and practical wisdom, demonstrating that with determination and forward-thinking, barriers can be broken, and new standards can be set in any industry.
